How Do I Setup a Course Series?

Posted by Jeff Walter   12/13/2012    0 Comments

The Course Series functionality is used to automatically enroll users in a bundle of courses when they enroll a single course.  When you create a course series there are two things you need to consider: 1) which courses should be included in the bundle; and 2) what order should be courses be taken in?

"Can You Give Me an Example?"

For example, consider three courses A, B, and C that you want to turn into a series.  The first question is which courses should be included in the bundle?  When a user enrolls in A, should they be enrolled in both B and C? or just B? or just C? When they enroll in B, should they be enrolled in both A and C? or just A? or just C? when the enroll in C, should they be enrolled in A or B?

Let’s assume for this example that we have a simple series A->B->C.  Where if they enroll in A they should be automatically enrolled in B and C.  If they enroll in B, they should be automatically enrolled in C. And if the enroll in C, they shouldn’t be automatically enrolled in any other courses.

The second question is what sequence should the courses be taken in?  Do they have to complete A before they start B and complete B before they start C?  Or can they complete A and B in any order but have to complete both before they can start C? Or do they have to complete A before starting B and C?

Let’s assume for this example they must complete A before starting B and complete B before starting C.

"Ok, But How Do I Express This in the Learning Management System?"

Every course in the LMS can be turned into a Series Course.  When a course is a Series Course, you can define its Predecessor and Successor courses.  When users enroll in a Series Course, the LMS will automatically enroll users in the course’s Predecessor and Successor courses.

To set up the simple series in our example, we’re going to go to course A and define B as its successor. We’ll also go to course B and define C as its successor. Therefore when users enroll in A, the LMS will automatically enroll them in B and when the LMS enrolls them in B, it will automatically enroll them in C.  Likewise if users enroll in B directly, the learning management system will automatically enroll them in C.

Now that we’ve defined the bundle of courses in the series, we need to define order in which users will take the courses.  To do this we’ll use Prerequisites.  Prerequisites define the conditions users must satisfy before starting a course.  In our example, they must complete A before starting B, so A will be defined as a Prerequisite of B.  Likewise, B will be defined as a Prerequisite of C.
