In a highly fragmented LMS product market (one 2009 study listed 248 major vendors of LMS products), the published list of features is extensive. Companies compete by promoting the awards won and their positive industry analyst reviews. Latitude competes in these arenas, but also addresses the what may be the most important implentation concern by offering our solution as open source.

Latitude's full-featured community open-source LMS  serves both small and large organizations. In fact, with almost one million total registered users on its platforms, Latitude would rank among the top 10 training platforms (The Baker's Dozen - Training and Development, February 2006 by Jay Whitehead, HRO Today). Latitude’s software was also a Knowledge Management World Magazine’s Promise Award Finalist in 2006. Most importantly, Latitude’s solutions helped one of its clients to win the Excellence in Practice Award for Performance Improvement from the American Society of Training and Development.

Beyond all of this competitive evaluation, however, lies an extremely important customer need. One of the most common and most important complaints from LMS customers is that they cannot modify the software quickly or easily enough to accommodate their needs (Bersin & Associates Industry Report – LMS Customer Satisfaction 2007). In fact, over 25% of all LMS customers are highly dissatisfied with their LMS and are seeking to replace it. By offering an open source solution, Latitude solves two important needs in this area:

  • Control: an open source license addresses this issue by allowing users to make their own modifications and enabling the user community to dictate the evolution of the product.
  • Cost of changes: many software vendors have difficulty making changes to their flagship products, even though client requirements need this capability. With open source, not only is Latitude’s community open source LMS is designed to accommodate this, but our clients enjoy a lower total cost of ownership. Over time, every client benefits from changes driven by the user community.

"…positioned for high-impact sales readiness, channel/client management, and certification programs. Large organizations with disparate departments requiring a holistic management construct should investigate the platform. Furthermore, medium sized sales or service organization with expectations of growth should take a hard look at [Latitude's] LMS to leverage future growth plans."
